North Canara(Uttara Kannada) district is one of the beautiful and cultured districts of our Karnataka State India, with huge natural resources. The district has varied geographical features with thick forest, long rivers and ample flora plants and animals and a long coastal belt of about 140 KM in length. It is surrounded by Belgaum district, Goa in the North, and Dharwar district in the East, by Shimoga and Udupi districts in the South. Arabian Sea forms the West border. In its 10.25 lakh hectares of total land, of which 8.28 hectares is Forest land. And only about 1.2 lakh hectares of land (roughly about 10%) is under agriculture / horticulture. The district consists of 11 Talukas namely Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Sirsi, Siddapur, Yellapur, Mundgod, Haliyal, and Supa(Joida).
Kannada & Konkani is the major Regional Language spoken. The cultivable land in the district is approximately 10 percent, as the forests dominate the total area. Apart from the natural resources the district has also got some manmade wonders. Important among them are Hydro Electric Power Project and Nuclear Power Project. The important Hydro Electric Power Projects are Supa Dam, Kadra Dam, Kodasalli and Gerusoppa Dam along with their generating units and among Nuclear Power Project, the Kaiga Nuclear Power Project is important.
Uttara Kannada District receives heavy rainfall during monsoon period. The important rivers flowing in the district are Kali river (Karwar,Supa(Joida) Taluk), Gangavali/Bedti river (Ankola Taluk), Aghanashini river (Kumta,Siddapur, Sirsi Taluk), Sharavati river (Honnavar Taluk), Venkatapur river (Bhatkal Taluk), Varada river (Sirsi Taluk), Bedti river (Yellapur Taluk).The depth of these rivers ranges from 9' to 10' and the riverbank height is about 12' to 15'.

Though the District is located in coastal area, it is not so famous for its marine products. But activities connected with Fisheries are carried out on large scales with the help of State Government as well as Central Government. The main tribes of the district are Sidhi, Kunabi, Halakki Vokkaliga, Gonda and Gouli. Sidhis are said to have been brought by the Portuguese from Africa as slaves some four hundred years ago. Their population is around ten thousand and is generally found in Haliyal, Yellapur and Ankola taluks. Now their culture is completely Indian and has adopted mainly Hindu religion. Halakki Vokkaligas living in the foot of Western Ghats are known as the "Locals of Uttara Kannada".

SAHASRALINGA
Traversing in the midst of areca, coconut and banana plantations the forest opens its beauty to the onlooker. The very sound of water moving about is heard in the midst of greenery and all of a sudden river Shalmala comes to the sight of the visitors. On the banks of the river there is only forest with the chirping of birds. The Shalmala moves gently on rocks and in the midst there are thousand Shiva lingams (idols of lord Shiva). Where ever one looks he sees Shiva idols. The history reveals that sodhe king Arasappa Nayak had made these idols carved for progeny. MAGOD FALLS
Among many Famous waterfalls Magod is one. The river Bedti jumping down from 650 meters in between solid rocks attracts the travelers. It is also called 'Holati Joga' as there was a belief that an ancient fort was nearby. A watching tower and canteen are working. SATHODI FALLS
Sathodi Falls is a waterfall in India that is formed by several unnamed streams near Kallaramarane Ghat, Uttara Kannada District, and 32 km from Yellapur. It is about 15 meters (49.2 feet) tall. The stream then flows into the backwaters of the Kodasalli Dam, into the Kali River.
SHIRLEY FALLS
The falls is located on the Sirsi-Hulekal road. The stream is known as Basavana holey, which flows down to join Kengrey holey. After gushing down, the stream breaks into three directions only to become one again some distance ahead. This is a good picnic spot. A visitor can only stand there and admire the force of nature. The presence of a Nandi statue and sculptures of devas and devis attach a divine value to the place.

TIBETAN COLONY

Attiveri Bird Sanctuary:
Attiveri was declared as a bird sanctuary on 17th August 2000. It lies around the Attiveri reservoir and spans across 2.23 SqKm. It was formed as a result of the construction of a dam across Tayavvanahalla River in the village of Attiveri. This reservoir which was plenty in aquatic life attracts many birds, especially aquatic species, and was therefore developed as bird sanctuary. The agricultural fields around the santuary are full of aquatic creatures, which are a major source of food for the bird life of about 79 species, including migratory birds from 22 countries. THE STORY OF MHATOBAR SHREE VINAYAKA DEVARU, IDAGUNJI
Idagunji is a small place in Honnavara taluk, Uttar Kannada district, which has the famous Vinayaka temple. The temple is the main attraction at Idagunji, receiving more than 1 million devotees per year.
Idagunji Devasthana is an ancient temple with a history of more than 1500 years. The story of the temple is as follows.
At the end of 'Dwapara Yuga' great saints were praying to the Sutha-Pouranika at Badarikashrama. Shri Krishna had implied to eliminate the on coming doshas of 'Kaliyuga'. The divine saint, Valakhilya initiated narrating the significance of Kunjavana.
Valakhilya along with other immortal saints was performing penitential activities in a forest. They started experiencing diverse hindrance in penitentiary activities. The holy saint was agitated by these obstacles. He seeked solace and worshipped Lord Krishna. Narada the noble saint approached Valakhilya. Narada received cordial and satiate wel-come with due rituals. Valakhilya explained his difficult situation to the divine saint and requested him to suggest pragmatic solutions to deal with the obstacles on his way. Narada advised him to worship God Vigneshwara (the remover of obstacles) before starting the penance again.
Valakhilya requested Narada to show him an appropriate place to worship the deity. Narada along with Valakhilya and other saints wandered westward in search of a suitable place. They came across the Sharavati river which gracefully caressed and consolidated with the ocean.
Narada chalked out an exact place located a few miles away to the left of Sharavati. The place was named as Kunjaranya. This would be a deserving place for their penitential activities. To add up to the significance of the place, Narada explained that in the past from time to time the Holy Trinity, Hari, Har and Brahma have come to this place to conduct their penance to stop the destruction of the "Asuras" (the demons). They also created lakes termed as "Chakratirtha" and "Brahmatirtha" which is truly a spiritual inspiration.
After sketching out this to all the saints, Narada with the help of the saints fabricated another lake named "Devatirtha". He then offered to bring Ganapathi (Vinayaka) along with other Gods including the Holy Trinity. Narada approached Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara to attend the "Puja" at Kunjaranya offered by the saints. He also took the liberty of requesting Parvathi to send her son, Ganapathi to the saints for the removal of obstacles.
Narada's charisma led all the Heavenly Gods along with Lord Ganapathi to attend the "Puja" with eminence and grandeur. The temple dedicated especially for this purpose was decked with attractive decor and the enormous glittering diamonds and stones. Ganapathi received the rites, rituals and ceremonious formalities on the second day of Poorvathretha Yuga Nrapavara Chanda Shakabda 813 Vibhava Samwathsara which was decided as Uttarayana Shishiraruthu Maghamasa Shukla Dwitheeya Budhavara Punarwasu Nakshatra (Uttarashadha Nakshatra Visvamuhoortha the most auspicious time by Brahma.
The great saints and Heavenly beings chanted the hymns in praise of Lord Ganapathi. Ganapathi, magnificently attired, was holding “Modhaka” and “Padma” in his hands.
Immensely pleased by the devotion rendered on him by the saints, Ganapathi expressed his desire to grant the wishes of his devotees. The other Gods were cherished and treated equivalently. They also blessed their worshippers. The other Gods appealed to go to their original places. Ganapathi emphasized his decision to stay and gratify the desires of his devotees. He also implied the Gods to leave behind a part of their omniscient power in the various lakes encompassed there.
The devotees can attain their hearts desires by dripping into the varied "Theerthas" and by offering pujas to Him. A lake was bestowed to provide water for bathing at Ganapathi's request. It was named as "Ganeshtith".So according to this purana , Lord Ganapathi stayed in the place Kunjaranya which is now renowned as Idagunji.

ARYADURGA TEMPLE

DANDELI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
The sanctuary covers part of the rich forests of the Uttara Kannada District, on the banks of the river Kali. In the jungles of Dandeli, one can spot several animals as well as birds including many endangered species – provided the reasonable ground for the government to declare the Dandeli forest, a National Wildlife Sanctuary in 1956.
The sanctuary now covers an area of 834.16 square kilometers. This sanctuary is the second largest wildlife sanctuary of Karnataka. Along with its adjoining Anshi National Park; Dandeli is an abode of 40 tigers. All credit goes to the government announced Project Tiger that has helped increase the tiger-count to 40 from just 13 in 1997.

Yana is a village located in forests of the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. It is located in the Sahyadri mountain range of the Western Ghats, about 60 kilometres (37 mi) from Karwar port, 40 kilometres (25 mi) from Sirsi, and 31 kilometers (19 mi) from Kumta. The two unique rock outcrops near the village are a tourist attraction and easily approachable by a small trek through 0.5 kilometres (0.31 mi) of thick forests from the nearest road head. Yana is famous for these two massive rock outcrops known as the Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and the Mohini Shikhara (“Shikhara” means “hill”). The huge rocks are composed of solid black, crystalline Karst limestone. Bhairaveshwara Shikhara is 120 metres (390 ft) in height, while the Mohini Shikhara, which is smaller, is 90 metres (300 ft) in height. SATHODI FALLS
Sathodi Falls is a waterfall in India that is formed by several unnamed streams near Kallaramarane Ghat, Uttara Kannada District, and 32 km from Yellapur. It is about 15 meters (49.2 feet) tall. The stream then flows into the backwaters of the Kodasalli Dam, into the Kali River.
SHIRLEY FALLS
The falls is located on the Sirsi-Hulekal road. The stream is known as Basavana holey, which flows down to join Kengrey holey. After gushing down, the stream breaks into three directions only to become one again some distance ahead. This is a good picnic spot. A visitor can only stand there and admire the force of nature. The presence of a Nandi statue and sculptures of devas and devis attach a divine value to the place.

Attiveri Bird Sanctuary:
Attiveri was declared as a bird sanctuary on 17th August 2000. It lies around the Attiveri reservoir and spans across 2.23 SqKm. It was formed as a result of the construction of a dam across Tayavvanahalla River in the village of Attiveri. This reservoir which was plenty in aquatic life attracts many birds, especially aquatic species, and was therefore developed as bird sanctuary. The agricultural fields around the santuary are full of aquatic creatures, which are a major source of food for the bird life of about 79 species, including migratory birds from 22 countries. Idagunji is a small place in Honnavara taluk, Uttar Kannada district, which has the famous Vinayaka temple. The temple is the main attraction at Idagunji, receiving more than 1 million devotees per year.
Idagunji Devasthana is an ancient temple with a history of more than 1500 years. The story of the temple is as follows.
At the end of 'Dwapara Yuga' great saints were praying to the Sutha-Pouranika at Badarikashrama. Shri Krishna had implied to eliminate the on coming doshas of 'Kaliyuga'. The divine saint, Valakhilya initiated narrating the significance of Kunjavana.
Valakhilya along with other immortal saints was performing penitential activities in a forest. They started experiencing diverse hindrance in penitentiary activities. The holy saint was agitated by these obstacles. He seeked solace and worshipped Lord Krishna. Narada the noble saint approached Valakhilya. Narada received cordial and satiate wel-come with due rituals. Valakhilya explained his difficult situation to the divine saint and requested him to suggest pragmatic solutions to deal with the obstacles on his way. Narada advised him to worship God Vigneshwara (the remover of obstacles) before starting the penance again.
Valakhilya requested Narada to show him an appropriate place to worship the deity. Narada along with Valakhilya and other saints wandered westward in search of a suitable place. They came across the Sharavati river which gracefully caressed and consolidated with the ocean.
Narada chalked out an exact place located a few miles away to the left of Sharavati. The place was named as Kunjaranya. This would be a deserving place for their penitential activities. To add up to the significance of the place, Narada explained that in the past from time to time the Holy Trinity, Hari, Har and Brahma have come to this place to conduct their penance to stop the destruction of the "Asuras" (the demons). They also created lakes termed as "Chakratirtha" and "Brahmatirtha" which is truly a spiritual inspiration.
After sketching out this to all the saints, Narada with the help of the saints fabricated another lake named "Devatirtha". He then offered to bring Ganapathi (Vinayaka) along with other Gods including the Holy Trinity. Narada approached Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara to attend the "Puja" at Kunjaranya offered by the saints. He also took the liberty of requesting Parvathi to send her son, Ganapathi to the saints for the removal of obstacles.
Narada's charisma led all the Heavenly Gods along with Lord Ganapathi to attend the "Puja" with eminence and grandeur. The temple dedicated especially for this purpose was decked with attractive decor and the enormous glittering diamonds and stones. Ganapathi received the rites, rituals and ceremonious formalities on the second day of Poorvathretha Yuga Nrapavara Chanda Shakabda 813 Vibhava Samwathsara which was decided as Uttarayana Shishiraruthu Maghamasa Shukla Dwitheeya Budhavara Punarwasu Nakshatra (Uttarashadha Nakshatra Visvamuhoortha the most auspicious time by Brahma.
The great saints and Heavenly beings chanted the hymns in praise of Lord Ganapathi. Ganapathi, magnificently attired, was holding “Modhaka” and “Padma” in his hands.
Immensely pleased by the devotion rendered on him by the saints, Ganapathi expressed his desire to grant the wishes of his devotees. The other Gods were cherished and treated equivalently. They also blessed their worshippers. The other Gods appealed to go to their original places. Ganapathi emphasized his decision to stay and gratify the desires of his devotees. He also implied the Gods to leave behind a part of their omniscient power in the various lakes encompassed there.
The devotees can attain their hearts desires by dripping into the varied "Theerthas" and by offering pujas to Him. A lake was bestowed to provide water for bathing at Ganapathi's request. It was named as "Ganeshtith".So according to this purana , Lord Ganapathi stayed in the place Kunjaranya which is now renowned as Idagunji.

DANDELI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
The sanctuary covers part of the rich forests of the Uttara Kannada District, on the banks of the river Kali. In the jungles of Dandeli, one can spot several animals as well as birds including many endangered species – provided the reasonable ground for the government to declare the Dandeli forest, a National Wildlife Sanctuary in 1956.
The sanctuary now covers an area of 834.16 square kilometers. This sanctuary is the second largest wildlife sanctuary of Karnataka. Along with its adjoining Anshi National Park; Dandeli is an abode of 40 tigers. All credit goes to the government announced Project Tiger that has helped increase the tiger-count to 40 from just 13 in 1997.

Yana is a village located in forests of the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka.
